Hurry, Hurry - Step Right Up! The Curtain is About to Rise on Adelaide's Most Spectacular New Bar

Think Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens! Think The Famous Spiegeltent! Think Moulin Rouge! Prepare to be amazed and have your senses indulged as the curtain goes up on Monday July 18 to Adelaide's most unique new entertainment experience - THE BOHO BAR. Lavishly celebrating the rich and diverse theatrical, festive and artistic culture of Adelaide and beyond, THE BOHO BAR needs to be seen to be believed! Located just minutes from the city at 27 Unley Road, Parkside - BOHO's sumptuous interior is hidden behind a series of ornate, custom-made leadlight panels. What awaits you inside is a whole new world - one which incorporates the nostalgic elements of the circus, the old burlesque sideshows and classic, bohemian cabaret theatres - and mixes them with sleek, modern service and a kaleidoscope of sounds, light and movement. Encompassing two bars (Sideshow Bar downstairs and Circle Bar upstairs), a café and an intimate, private lounge area called the Boudoir - BOHO is set to become the most talked about venue in town. The unique theme for BOHO's interior was the brainchild of Adelaide architect - Mark Folland - (Director, Folland Panozzo Architects) - and has been almost 18 months in the making. Folland drew his initial inspiration from the building's unusual structure. "The original characteristics of the interior - which is split in half by a sizeable mezzanine level and features a unique tiered ceiling and exposed, steel trusses - reminded me structurally of being inside the Big Top," says Folland. "I knew we could enhance the effect of walking into a circus tent by utilising the existing structure and showcasing some of those more dominant elements instead of trying to hide them." But while the rich, textured, red and navy drapes - hung luxuriously from the ceiling to the polished jarrah wood floors - create the initial circus tent effect, Folland was keen to steer away from the traditional 'lions and tigers' circus concept in BOHO's overall interior theming - placing more emphasis on the theatrical and carnival aspects. "We wanted to draw on the more carnival elements of the circus - and weave those with the darker, nostalgic aspects of cabaret theatre and sideshow amusement parks. That's how we came to look to landmark venues like the Famous Spiegeltent and Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens to broaden our design scope, together with a good helping of Moulin Rouge." The result is THE BOHO BAR - a venue which exudes a unique atmosphere of fantasy, escapism, drama, opulence, colour and seduction. Once inside the venue - the cabaret theatre and sideshow atmosphere takes over and transports you to another place and time. Folland worked with acclaimed Adelaide set designer Victoria Lamb and her team of scenic painters, led by the immensely talented Sandra Anderson, to realise the overall vision for the interior. The walls are adorned with a brilliant array of theatrical memorabilia - much of which has been donated from the State Theatre Company or sourced through Lamb's theatrical contacts Australia-wide. There are vintage theatre lights hoisted from thick ropes, old theatre posters and programs - mounted and framed - and classic cabaret flicks are projected onto the walls. The furnishings lean towards the Moulin Rouge and are rich, romantic and luxurious - with lots of velvet and brocade in deep hues. From the rows of original theatre seats, the balcony boxes, the old sideshow Fortune Teller machines and actual theatre set pieces - BOHO breathes drama, mystery and intrigue. The ground floor incorporates two main elements - the Sideshow Bar and the café area. The menu (created by chef Quinton Hughes) includes a few carnival-inspired creations and if you're feeling adventurous - indulge in a glass of Absinthe at the bar (infamous for its hallucinatory properties including the green fairy made famous by Moulin Rouge!!). BOHO's upper level is accessed through a 'Tunnel of Light' and features the Circle Bar and entry to the more intimate and private surrounds of the Boudoir. The focus of the Circle Bar is undoubtedly the spectacular chandelier which adorns the centre of the room. Created by Adelaide community arts company Stiltz - the chandelier is made entirely of vintage crystal cups, vases and condiment bowls, interspersed with hand-made red and blue glass beads - a truly unique and breath-taking centre-piece. Step up to the Boudoir for a sensory overload. Enclosed in plush, red drapes - this room is the very essence of intimacy and opulence. Sink into one of the regal, velvet couches and lose yourself in the flames flickering within the customised fireplace or just lean back and take in the spectacular night sky which adorns the ceiling. BOHO's entertainment will be as eclectic as the venue itself - incorporating everything from cabaret, opera, live brass and strings with modern beats from Adelaide's best DJ's mixing unique blend
