Gum Disease Therapy
Periodontal disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums. It can cause serious damage to the tissues supporting teeth including bone. As a result, the teeth may become loose and require extraction. The purpose of periodontal treatment is to stop or slow down the progression of disease. Treatment may involve the following: ▪ removal of build-ups of plaque and calculus using dental instruments ▪ scaling - the tooth surface is cleaned in shallow pockets below the gum line ▪ root planing - deposits are removed from the root surface in deeper pockets ▪ replacement of fillings, if a filling is contributing to gum disease. As gum disease tends to reoccur, it is most important for maintenance therapy to follow periodontal treatment.
