Mercury Free Restorations

We are a mercury-free practice. The NHMRC report states: «general public and environmental health principles dictate that where possible exposure to mercury from dental amalgams be reduced where a safe and practical alternative exists» (Australian Dental Association). Dental composite resins can be an alternative to dental amalgam. They are made of a mixture of plastic and ceramic particles. Their colour can be matched to the colour of your teeth, hence they are more aesthetically attractive than amalgam. Teeth filled with composite material tend to be stronger, as it bonds chemically to the tooth surface. Placement of composite restorations is less invasive because it does not require removal of the tooth tissues as much as amalgam. Also composites can help insulate the tooth from major temperature changes. As the technique of composite restoration placement is more complex than in amalgam, these restorations are slightly more expensive than amalgam. Amalgam restorations can be replaced for composite ones when necessary. This procedure is done «under the rubber dam» - a special device preventing swallowing of released mercury and other debris.
