I have just finished judging the 2014 Property Council (WA) Retail Awards

I have just had the pleasure of judging the 2014 Property Council (WA) Retail Awards for Excellence. There were close to 60 entries from a variety of retail shopping centres (small and large).
While there was a lot of duplication with shopping centres running promotions around food (My Kitchen Rules obviously!) and fashion, there were some unique entries that really showed a smart approach.
One of the shopping centres, The Mezz in Mount Hawthorn, focused on the fact that they were seeking to be the 3rd space. As they explained, for most people, home is the first place where they spend their time and then work is the second. As such The Mezz was looking to be the 3rd preferred choice and had included a number of community elements including a playground, outdoor fire place etc in their centre.
I believe this is the future for retail space, as we move away from internet shopping, and a desire to feel more connected with our community.
The results of the Awards will be released at a Gala Ball on Friday 5 September. Stay tuned for all the winners details!
