"The aim of FOR LIFE Dog Training Schoolis to increase the joy of owner and pet relationships, thereby assuring a long and happy life for all dogs."
Steph started training her first dog sometime between the age of 5 and 10 years of age. 'Chipper', tragically lost at the age of 5, was the beginning of a life long love of working with animals.
When Steph moved to Australia she was involved in training and exhibiting horses. Show jumping, and later Dressage, became a passion. Steph qualified and competed in Royal Shows while living in the East, and went on to breaking, training, and giving riding / handling lessons.
Steph started competitive dog training with her first German Shepherd Dog (GSD) 'Jedi' in 1986. This led to a succession of GSDs, all top-winning dogs in both Specialty and All Breed competitions. Steph has been a member of the German Shepherd Dog Association of WA. since 1986, where she was a Trainer for 10 years. The cream of her GSDs were Rusty and her daughter Cherokee Moon that won many performance events at all levels. This included this mother and daughter winning Top UD dog at the Western Classic Dog Show in 3 out of 4 consecutive years.
More recently, Steph's Dogs have won top awards across the country in conformation, obedience, agility and herding. In 2008 Steph finished her Australian Shepherd 'ROWDY' as Triple Champion (Show Ch. Obedience Ch. Herding Ch.) Sugargum Ruff N Rowdy ADX JDX HXAs HXBd HIAd HIBs, the first and only dog to date (Feb 2011) to hold all these titles in Australia.
Over the years Steph has attended many Clinics, both in Australia and overseas, given by some of the worlds most renowned dog trainers. She has also organized for many of these trainers to come to WA to give clinics. The "For Life" Dog Training School is situated on the Gibson's 5 acres. It's fenced, private and free from wandering strays, safe for dogs of all ages. Purpose built schoolrooms can be used for both day and night training, and open out onto a large fenced, safe, lawned arena where off leash training can be safely performed.
Early Puppy Training, basic home Good Manners, behavioral problems, and Obedience & Herding at Trial Standard are all catered for. Owners are taught how to train their own dogs, and how to keep the good behavior up. Lessons include theory as well as practical hands on instruction. Understanding 'how' your dog learns, is the first step to a successful and mutually enjoyable experience.
Puppy and Good Manners classes are positive based to keep it fun and rewarding for both owner and dog. For those wishing to compete, Clicker Training and Operant Conditioning are Steph's specialties. These methods are essential to achieve the precise positions and happy work required for today's Trial winners.
Steph has training to help you with your reactive (aggressive) dog. Using biology and positive training, these unhappy dogs are rewired to accept and relax in the proximity of other dogs. Steph can help you deal with reactivity and the other difficult behavioral problems that other trainers won't deal with, or are unsuccessful with. All can be managed by any owner who wants to put in the hard yards for their pet.
Herding is the most recent of Steph's dog sporting activity. She first started in ANKC All Breed Herding in 2002 where she has been involved in the administration of Herding both Nationally and in WA. In this time she has made many trips the Eastern States and the U.S. to learn and compete finishing the only Advanced titled Australian Shepherds in Australia. Steph hold Herding Training lessons on the property next to her home on weekends and some week day mornings.
