Singing connects us to ourselves, our bodies, our feelings and our lives. It can also give us the opportunity to explore or "try" on different feelings and attitudes. With our voice we express who we are. In the best moments, singing feels like being in joyous flow. Many people wish they could sing, without realising that singing is a skill that can be learned. Others have questions about why their voices don't always respond the way they wish when they sing, how to sing with more expression, or with less fear.
Singing lessons with me (Raelene) are an opportunity, to explore, play with and develop your voice regardless of your existing level of skill. I am a singer songwriter, a registered music therapist and a researcher. My research involves using music and song to explore and communicate other areas of knowledge. I am have many years experience of working with both experienced musicians and complete beginners to help them meet their own goals in relation to singing, whether they be about skill or self-expression. I have a Bachelor of Music, a certificate of Estill vocal figure proficiency, am a PhD candidate in performance, and have a passion for songs, singing, and midwifing voices. My initial training was classical, but I now sing in a range of more contemporary styles, and understand the process of changing from one to another.
There are many reasons you may choose to have singing lessons. They could include learning to sing in tune, overcoming getting a sore throat when you sing, understanding how your voice works better, increasing the range of vocal colours you can use, increasing your confidence, developing performance and expressive skills, or simply self-care.
