The Direct Bond (DB) Ceramic Lagging system was introduced in 2005 by Orontide to improve the service life of lagging on conveyor pulleys for BHP Billiton Iron Ore and shortly after for Dampier Salt. Prior to the DB lagging system being introduced, traditional systems using either rubber or rubber-backed ceramic were used with an average lifespan of around 2 years in operation before maintenance was required. Following a number of field trials and independent third party tests the DB system was proven to be far superior to previous lagging systems used in the mining industry and was released into the Pulley OEM and Repair Engineering Specifications as the preferred lagging system. The DB ceramic lagging system is now applied in Orontide's Port Hedland and Henderson workshops by a team of employees engaged in application on a fulltime basis. Recent trials conducted on chutes, deflectors, reclaimer buckets and wet plant equipment have shown excellent results in increasing the service life demonstrating a diverse range of opportunities for DB ceramic lagging applications in the mining industry.
