Many companies are offering end of financial year sales. Make sure you do not get caught by 'low cost' probes even if they claim to be brand new. THESE PROBES COULD STILL BE DAMAGED.
Dropping a probe for example can cause 'micro cracking' within the acoustic array. Dropped probes often get sold by overseas companies as 'core probes' which are used for parts and should not be sold to end users. Sometimes these 'great deals' are in fact companies selling core probes. The image below shows damage to the acoustic array of a cardiac probe. This damage could not be seen in the B-Mode image but was detected in an acoustic test. The probe will gradually deteriorate as the crack forms across the array.
Many faults are not evident in the ultrasound image but will manifest themselves over the next 3-6 months. If you are buying a transducer - if it is NEW, REFURBISHED or USED please make sure you insist on an acoustic test report for every transducer. An acoustic test fires each and every element of the array and analyses the return signal. The chart below shows the format of the report and some of the failures that can be detected.
