"What is Monster Music?" I hear many people ask. My short answer is "It's an agency for music teachers", though this is a generalisation... In 1998 I was teaching guitar almost full time from home and in schools, in addition to gigging 3 nights per week - at the time with Daren Reid & The Soul City Groove. I had students of all ages and walks of life turn up for lessons: kids, teenagers, adults, some with professional aspirations and a handful in retirement who were fulfilling a desire that had long escaped them. Recently I've been teaching some of the ladies from the Australian "Hockeyroos" hockey team, as an outlet from their intense training schedules. No doubt the pleasure has been all theirs! :) You'll see my pleasure (in the denoted picture) of my daughter and I playing together. I will never forget that moment. I just love watching kids adapt to music and movement so naturally, particularly when they're mine! I believe everyone has an attachment to music and felt the urge to play an instrument at some point - if not they've undoubtedly belted out a few bars in the shower or the car on the odd occasion! Personally I showed an interest in the guitar at the age of 7 and quickly turned my knowledge/skills/passion into a lifetime career - live performance and music teaching. I started performing live at 15 and began teaching at 17, whilst still in high school. Since then I've played with hundreds of musicians - many renowned Australian artists, aspiring musicians, and others who are just damn good fun musical people to be around! I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey and meeting the countless amazing, diverse and talented characters that the music industry seems to continually deliver. But back to Monster Music and its evolution... By 2000 I had also taken a major interest in the internet and in particular what Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) had to offer. I quickly learnt how to build my own web site AND promote it. Within months I had more enquiries for music tuition than I could handle and then decided to outsource the work to other music teachers. This is how Monster Music began. SEO and Online Marketing has evolved dramatically since 2000, though Monster Music continues to compete hard in this field - now by way of it's new online directory. Aside from live performance, my appreciation for various musical genres and teaching people how to play them has always been a major driving force for me. Some of the most rewarding moments in my career have been watching my students' smiling faces walk out the door with a sense of confidence and accomplishment - often on a weekly basis. So, here I am 20 years along (since deciding to teach guitar) doing more-or-less the same thing - enjoying music, playing music, teaching music, loving family life AND connecting music students with other great music teachers throughout Australia! "If you're still with me, come checkout some other stuff in the Monster Music Blog"

Movies like The Sapphires and Bran Nue Dae, and old industry pros such as Archie Roach and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and even the TV show Redfern Now are all part of the indigenous uprising within the industry.

Music and Literacy Study by New London Orchestra has Startling Implications

In my time giving guitar and other music lessons in Perth, I have always suspected that people who took music lessons were a little sharper than those who didn’t. I never really had any proof, but it just seemed that kids who were doing music had it a bit more “together” than those who don’t.
