The Mindfulness Based Stress Reducation program is the international benchmark for mindfulness based programs, originating at the School of Medicine, Universiy of Massachusetts. It has over 30 years of research showing consistent, reliable, and reproducible major and clinically relevant reductions in medical and psychological symptoms across a wide range of medical and psychological diagnoses. Mindfulness is a practice, a systematic method aimed at cultivating clarity, insight and understanding. The MBSR is a way to learn to take better care of yourself by exploring and understanding the interplay of mind and body and mobilising your own inner resources for coping, growing and healing. Its benefits include: • Relief from physical and psychological distress • Greater peace, balance and enthusiasm for life • Effective ways to cope with stress • Increased self-awareness and self-regulation • Greater concentration, focus, working memory and attentional flexibility • Enhanced emotional intelligence Participating in the MBSR requires an ongoing commitment to yourself. You will be asked to attend all classes, including the one-day retreat, and to practice daily home assignments (45–60 mins/day). The program involves 8 weekly classes (2 1/2 – 3 hours weekly) and a one-day retreat. The approach is highly participatory, supportive and structured. Participants receive: • guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices • gentle stretching (yoga) • group dialogue and mindful communication exercises to enhance awareness in everyday life • individually tailored instruction • daily home assignments • home practice materials including guided mindfulness practice MP3s and a workbook
