Oscar Wilde's comedy classic is brought to stage by the University Dramatic Society this season! Oscar Wilde’s most enduringly popular play is a farcical comedy of wit and intrigue which follows two friends, Jack and Algernon, who adopt fictitious identities for the purposes of avoiding burdensome social obligations between the city and the country. A playful comment on the contemporary Victorian conventions of morality, triviality and the dandy, Earnest is a fast paced, sharply punctuated comedy, filled with a good deal of hypocrisy and a healthy dose of British sarcasm. A lesson in the escapades of a ‘Bunburyist’, The Importance of Being Earnest enjoys a light hearted rowdiness and banter, revealing long hidden truths and identities, but keeping up the ruse until the last muffin has disappeared from the proverbial platter.
