When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. If we could put your teeth away on a shelf and let them stay there, they would remain perfectly straight. But fortunately, they are there to be used. Naturally, as the teeth are used, there will be adaptive changes so they function best. We do not expect them to stay exactly as we have placed them since these changes will occur as the teeth are used. This is not a failure of your orthodontic correction, but nature's change that we may learn to expect just as we learn to expect changes in other parts of your body as we grow older. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. Your final orthodontic result depends on your diligence with wearing your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. Retainers, as the name implies, retain the teeth in the corrected position. When the tooth is moved, the ligaments holding the tooth to the bone are stretched and it takes approximately one year for the relaxation of these fibres to occur. Thus, the full-time wear of reatiners for at least one year is strongly recommended. Without retainer wear during this time, teeth can move in undesirable directions. Remember to remove your retainer before brushing, and brush your retainer before placing it back in your mouth.
