The consulting division of ECS Corporate, aptly named ECS Assist, specialises in predictive Air Emissions Modelling from point or area sources. A number of modelling software packages can be employed depending on the complexity of the issue and the specific information required from the study. Meteorological data is obtained using the The Air Pollution Model (TAPM) and modelling of a variety of parameters can be done using either of the following software;

CALPUFF is an advanced dispersion model which simulates gas species releases as a time series of individual puffs, each containing a Gaussian distribution of species concentration. The individual puffs are considered separately allowing for changes in wind speed and direction with time and topographical influences. Unlike simple models, CALPUFF can accurately simulate thermal inversions and extreme meteorological conditions critical to dispersion assessments. CALPUFF has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in its Guideline on Air Quality Models as the preferred model for assessing long range transport of pollutants.

The Victorian EPA AUSPLUME dispersion model employs a simpler dispersion technique than CALPUFF, however it is assumed that 90% of the particles will be deposited within a short distance of the source (Watson et al 2000). AUSPLUME is advantageous in this scenario as it features advanced calculation of deposition as a function of the particle size distribution.

The AUSPLUME model employs the same deposition algorithm as used in the standard US EPA model, ISC3. This algorithm tilts the plume downwards at an angle that depends on the settling velocities of the particles and uses an accurate method for estimating deposition at the ground (dry deposition). Plume depletion due to deposition loss of material can also be estimated by integrating the mass balance of material along the path of the plume.
