After having worked on the first series of Relocation: Phil Down Under, UK based production company IWC Media invited me to work as DP/cameraman on episodes of series 2 based around Melbourne and Victoria.
Director of Photography
Relocation: Phil Down Under features Phil Spencer, the popular host of Location, Location, Location, as he helps British migrant families find their dream home in Australia.
The nature of the series meant shooting large amounts of footage with strict time constraints.
My filming centred mainly around the families of Tom and Julie as they struggled to find a suitable home, and Tez and Anna proprietors of La Madre bakery and their impressions after five years in Australia.
I shot in XDCAM HD format, using the Sony XDCAM PDW-700, as well as the Sony PMW- EX3 for ‘run and gun’ footage of the families going about their day, filming impromptu dialogue and their interactions with Phil via telephone.
Flexibility was important, especially the ability to self-direct when producers were needed at other locations or wiring microphones for a last minute interview.
As well as some colourful highlights of Melbourne, I was fortunate to film two innovative extensions to Victorian-style homes, including a kitchen with a glass wall that could be slid aside to connect the room with an open patio, complete with trees and a barbeque.
The families were a pleasure to work with, as were the IWC crew from Glasgow, who were professional under a grueling pace, despite Melbourne’s extreme summer temperatures! Looking forward to series 3.
