Inspired by the tragic events of Black Saturday, Bartco has developed an electronic, automated LED Fire Danger Rating Sign (EFDRS) This sign is solar powered and uses LED indicators to display the relevant fire danger rating to motorists and the general public. In extreme fire conditions, it has been shown that providing accurate, up to date information is vital. That is what the Bartco EFDRS does. In addition to the LED indicators, an LED message panel can also display messages such as “TOTAL FIRE BAN” Information is sent to the sign via a web based interface or CFA interface. The Bartco EFDRS uses high bright LED indicators that correspond with the appropriate fire rating. The LED rating indicators are designed to provide an ascending increase in the indicator size to emphasize the different level and awareness importance of the rating. Specifically designed LED\’s have been sourced to correspond with the different rating Indicators. High brightness and wide angled LED\’s for optimal viewing was an imperative component. As summer rages on in Australia, a new system is being implemented to accurately communicate changes in the Fire Danger Rating and provide additional alert messages as needed for local commuters. New automated signs run on solar power and use mobile technology to update the electronic display. Previously, each sign had to be update manually, with an authorized employee driving to each sign to update the information. As well as being inefficient, the manual signs were prone to vandalism. Bartco Visual Information Systems recently won a product design award for their patented electronic fire danger rating sign, and shared that they created the winning design by working with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to understand the needs of the region. The automated signs are solar powered and update automatically via an RSS feed from the CFA website over cellular communications. “We knew that community awareness of fire danger ratings was a critical factor in helping people prepare when fire risk is extreme. The EFDRS was invented to provide a highly visible, always-on warning system that can be quickly and automatically updated from one location via our programming software. Independent research conducted recently has proven how effective the community finds this new technology, with over 80% of people surveyed believing the EFDRS was more noticeable, up-to-date and reliable.” ~Tim Brouwer, General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Bartco Victoria is the first state to implement the new signs, with three of them being erected just before summer started. The region currently has about 350 static fire danger rating signs and hopes to augment these with a total of 65 automated signs throughout the state. The CFA also provides fire danger rating information on their website or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line at 1800.240.667. FTS has earned a reputation for excellence within environmental monitoring solutions for fire weather, and our stations are used by every one of the top 50 government forest management agencies within Canada and the United States (and even in Australia), providing the single largest fire weather network in the world. The data collected via the tools FTS provides help save property, forests, and lives around the world. (
