To remain viable and cost effective, Miller Camera Support has invested in three vertical machining centres and a horizontal multi-axis machining centre to cut cycle times and meet rigorous part tolerances. And it’s no small investment. In order to get the most this significant capital expense of these machines, Manufacturing Manager Darren Burns decided to get the most from them and invest in an EZset tool presetter from Dimac Tooling, Mulgrave, VIC.

While some manufacturers aren’t getting the most from their machine tools because they lose valuable time, tool life, and ultimately money when operators touch off tools on the machine and manually enter offsets, Mr Burns decided to upgrade the company’s tool setting capabilities.

“The EZset tool presetter has improved our processes and the technology is compatible with our machines and our QI process, where we are running our CMMs for final inspection,” he says. “The tool presetter was a missing link in our production chain.”

“Bringing tool setup offline with the help of a presetter, and implementing a streamlined setup strategy can alleviate costs and hassles associated with tool changes,” says Dimac Tooling Director Paul Fowler. “The EZset tool presetter is a sophisticated but easy-to-use, non-contact presetter designed to significantly improve CNC machine productivity with its accurate and integrated calibration edges. “The machine offers increased profitability through its three-in-one functions of measuring, setting and inspecting cutting tools with ease,” Mr Fowler continues, and Mr Burns agrees. “The EZset was very easy to install and use.  Once set up, you place the tool to be measured into the tool holder, position the optical head, and measure the cutting edge without time-consuming adjustments.”

The optical technology of the EZset tool presetter enables Miller Camera Support to accurately measure tool length and diameter, calculate nose radii and angles, and detect damaged or unusable cutting edges. Moreover, bringing the tool setup offline keeps the machine tool spindle doing what it’s supposed to, making parts.

“The EZset tool presetter has improved our productivity at the start-up area by about 70% and reduced our start-up time by 24 minutes!” Mr Burns concludes. “We are very happy with the machine and Dimac’s service, they are very quick to respond.”
