Various types of leather have different degrees of inbuilt protection.
Aniline and semi aniline leathers are incredibly soft to the touch but should be treated with a certain amount of care due to the particularly light amount of protective topcoat on the surface. Waxed or pulled up leather requires less care and is protected on the surface with a waxy topcoat.
The most common leather in the marketplace is pigmented leather, either full grain or corrected grain. These leathers are very durable due to the protective clear topcoat that covers the underlying pigment. This surface coating can over a period of time and under different circumstances take quite a battering. The normal build-up of dirt and soil, natural body oils, perspiration and other contaminants can cause a gradual breakdown of this topcoat. If left unattended, colour loss and cracking of the surface of the leather will result.
Colortex technicians are able to assess whether your leather has an adequate barrier of protection against the normal wear and tear of everyday use. It is standard practice to apply our protective cream after every clean, which is also available as an after sales purchase for your ongoing use. If there has been a more than normal breakdown of the topcoat our leather conditioner can also be applied as a softening agent to prevent premature cracking of the leather. In more extreme cases of topcoat degradation our technician can respray a completely new topcoat to the entire surface.
Our technician is always available to offer advice on the long term care and protection of your leather furniture.
