Reflexology is a non-invasive, holistic therapy. The practitioner uses their fingers, thumbs and knuckles to apply gentle pressure to the reflex areas of the feet. Reflex points relate to all parts of the body and can be found in the feet and hands. These areas are arranged in such a way as to form a map of the body in the feet with the right foot corresponding to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponding to the left side of the body. These points respond to pressure and the body is able to start clearing any energetic blockages and re-establishing the flow of energy. Reflexology assists the body in activating its own healing mechanisms and restoring a healthy flow of energy throughout the body.
Reflexology can be used on its own, however it also works wonderfully in conjunction with other healthcare modalities.
Your practitioner will take a brief health history and discuss your health goals with your. While reflexology is holistic and all reflexes will be worked during a session, the practitioner is also able to target the treatment to reflect the health issues that you would most like to focus on. Once a the session plan has ben outlined, you will be invited to remove your shoes and socks and lie down on the massage table. Soothing music is played during the session to enhance your relaxation.
A reflexology session lasts between 40 to 55 minutes. The focus is on relaxation and balancing the body systems, and the practitioner works within a pressure level that is comfortable for the client. All of the reflexes on the right foot are worked, followed by all the reflexes on the left. The right foot is worked prior to the left as the right foot represents the past and the left foot represents the present. A cream is applied to the feet, and the practitioner applies pressure to the foot by “thumbwalking”, in which the thumb (or finger) bends and straightens whilst maintaining a constant pressure across the area of the foot being worked.
