Social Media has given sporting clubs and players a very public and direct line of communication to their supporters and fans.
It has allowed these sporting communities to market and grow in very different ways, quickly moving away from the traditional membership drives and revenue raising activities.
Sponsors (Brands) endorsing these clubs and players want to engage more and more within these sports communities and interact with their followers.
Social Media "following" directly relates to the club or player's value. It also represents the marketing and sales potential (Brand opportunity).

Over the past 3-5 years, I’ve personally been involved with sports clubs and sports players (and Professional athletes) and have observed how they market themselves and build online communities. Watching the sports industry evolve so quickly, and how many have not tapped into the value of using “proper” social media and digital marketing has been the catalyst to why I’ve established a Sporting Club and Player Marketing Group.
LinkedIn Sporting Club and Player Marketing Group has been created as a subdivision of general marketing to focus on the promotion of sports clubs, players, and brand-related product and services.
The goals of the Sporting Club and Player Marketing Group;
• Create an interactive forum for like-minded sports industry participants
• Promote and encourage best practice around sporting club and player marketing
• Assist sporting clubs and players to gain visibility from using social media marketing
• Help sports club and players to boost their brand presence to secure sponsorships that fund development activities.
