This week I was amazed to arrive home after work to find an envelope (large) that contained a magnetic promotional calendar for my fridge, as well as a Christmas card from "Travis" who I believe was a local realtor wishing me a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2015. A lovely sentiment I agree, but the fact that I don't deal with any real estate companies, have never heard or even spoke with Travis? Leaves me with an odd and somewhat spooky feel. Databases gone wrong? Old contacts in their system and a thought that it's a great idea to "send them a card anyway, can't do any harm". Time and time again, our company preaches the good word about 'quality and targeted' sales and marketing programs. Stop throwing money into the garden with spasmodic, unmeasurable campaigns that produce little or no results. More often than not, it simply wastes the time of your sales representatives having to follow up unqualified and/or irrelevant leads. Sure you say, "let's call it a branding exercise" well in this case, I'm quite sure everyone else who received this card was thinking how odd it was to receive a Christmas card from someone you have never met, and it was addressed to me personally? This screams privacy issues. It's these activities that erode great brands, not grow them.
