I do love a good coffee as part of my fluid intake and caffeine has the ability to increase power in older muscles, according to new research.
The ability of caffeine to enhance younger muscle’s force production has been previously established, but this was the first time that research has proved its efficacy in ageing muscles.
Sports scientists from Coventry University in the UK say that the results of their study conducted on mice suggest that caffeine may have a role in the reduction of injuries and falls by helping older people to maintain their strength.
For the study, the diaphragm and the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) leg muscles of mice of varying ages were tested for their performance both prior to and following the administration of caffeine.
The effects of caffeine were found to be smallest in juvenile muscles and greatest in adults ‘in their prime’, with the effects for older muscles somewhere in between.
Lead study author, Jason Tallis, said ‘Despite a reduced effect in the elderly, caffeine may still provide performance-enhancing benefits.’
‘With the importance of maintaining a physically active lifestyle to preserve health and functional capacity, the performance-enhancing benefit of caffeine could prove beneficial in the ageing population’ he said.
Be careful though coffee overconsumed or mixed into things like ‘energy drinks’ will quickly negatively impact your health....
