This is a fine, soft-leaf couch grass that prefers the sun and heat of the warm season and therefore is less tolerant of shade than many other types of turf. Santa Anna Couch has above ground runners (stolons) and underground runners (rhizones) which gives good density (matting) qualities. This varieties high shoot density and high tendency for horizontal growth gives it a flat, firm and dense surface that makes it great for gold fairways, tennis courts and cricket wickets with proper treatment. Like many couch turfs, Santa Anna is highly drought tolerant due to its deep, fibrous root system. Its ability to be mown as short as 10-20mm makes this grass a great choice for a well manicured lawn, although it tends to yellow off in winter due to Melbourne’s cool climate.
