Kikuyu is a light green, medium soft-leaf perennial creeper that has above ground runners (stolons) and below ground runners (rhizones) with a high level of thatching, making this variety quick to establish and relatively drought tolerant. Kiyuyu grass was named after the Kikuyu people of Kenya, where it was discovered growing in the Aberdare Mountains.
As is suggested by the name Kikuyu Male Sterile is sterile, making it unable to produce viable seeds independently. Normal Kikuyu is well known to spread veraciously and is highly invasive to the point of being considered a noxious weed in Australia. Due to the sterile nature of our Kikuyu, it doesn’t produce its own seeds or pollen and is therefore far less likely to spread outside of the area it is planted. Having said this, it can still be pollinated by non-sterile Kikuyu if it is situated close enough.
Being a very aggressive lawn, as well as having a high level of thatching, Kikuyu is perfect for high traffic and large dogs because of its ability to quickly repair itself. In fact, it is probably the fastest repairing turf variety available. In winter it will yellow off in colour as conditions get too cold.
