Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension, worry or dread that something might go wrong or something bad might happen. Some feelings of worry or anxiety are a normal and healthy part of life – worry can be helpful when it triggers us to take action or change our behaviour in order to function better in our life eg. Resolve conflicts, protect our children, achieve work or study goals, complete an exam. However, when worrying becomes excessive and overwhelming it is no longer helpful and can become debilitating and distressing. At this stage anxiety can be a hindrance to functioning well in everyday life. If you have a problem with anxiety you may notice: · Excessive worrying that takes up a lot of time and mental energy · Preoccupied by worries · Difficulty controlling the worry · Restlessness, feeling on edge · Difficulty with concentration and memory, mind sometimes goes blank · Feeling panicky · Lowered energy · Irritability · Difficulty functioning at work, home, school due to anxiety causing distress Physical signs: · Dizziness · Heart racing · Breathlessness · Sweating, feeling hot or flushed · Sweaty hands · Dry mouth · Muscle tension · Tension headaches
