THEY EMERGED 55-YEARS BEFORE
NED KELLY WAS BORN.
After the American War of Independence,
Britain was told it could no longer deposit its convicts on American soil. In 1788, The Great South Land [Australia] was substituted.
Bushrangers and bushranging grew
out of convictism when, in 1805, a terrible famine struck the tiny, infant
settlement at Sullivan’s Cove [later, ] on the island-jail, Van Diemen’s
Land [later, ]. Lieutenant-Governor David Collins
ordered several of the more trustworthy convicts be sent out into the bush with
gun and dog, to hunt for food. The convicts never returned. The term “Bush
Rangers” was then coined by the settlement’s Anglican Minister. The first and
mightiest bush-ranging epoch had begun.
In 1810, John Whitehead bolted
into the wilderness and formed the first bush-ranging gang. It wasn’t long before 100 escaped convict men were
under his command.
By 1825, hundreds of
fearsome, marauding, often cannibalistic bush-ranging gangs roamed the
island-jail. Many became illustrious as their kind continued to range,
From 1850, hundreds of Vandemonian
bushrangers migrated north, across the sea, to the new, non-convict Colony of
Victoria, on the Australian continent, where they used their felonious skills
to great effect, during ’s
great gold-rush. The second bush-ranging epoch began.
More prevalent, aggressive
and daring than the Uk’s Highwaymen and the USA’s wild west outlaws, Australia’s swashbuckling Bush
Rangers arose out of a shameful people-dumping experiment; ordered by a bigoted
19th century English aristocracy.
GD Bruny's BUSHRANGER ORIGINS is a sub-culture-rich
piece of Colonial history, revealed in a larger-than-life collection of scripted,
dramatically-acted scenes and sequences and graphically illustrated
story-segments. It is a completely self-funded impression, supported by fact, depicting actual characters and events, presented
in cavalcade form.
