Sing-Swing-Play is a not-for-profit program, for preschoolers with autism. Established in 2015 by Melinda Ceresoli, Sing-Swing-Play provided group music and movement classes to small groups, however, the program transitioned to individual lessons, so as to better cater to the individual needs of each child.

The program's three main aims are:
- to provide affordable music lessons to families with children wi;
- to assist with speech and language aquisition through singing;
- for each child and their carer to experience the joys of music together, through songs and rhymes.

In Term 4, 2015, we are introduced 25-minute individual (private) music lessons for preschoolers with autism and/or speech disorders. Ages for these lessons are 4-5 years. Lessons focus on singing and can also include some piano, if the child has suitable finger coordination and strength. Melinda has varied approaches to teaching piano that do not rely on reading music.

What happens in lessons?
Lesson content will differ somewhat for each child, depending upon various factors: age, cognitive development, verbal/non-verbal, social issues, etc.. However, at the core of each lesson is the goal of developing musical skills. They are: a musical ear, musical memory, and foundational musical elements, such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and tone. Reading musical notation is not a priority. Some young children will take to reading music, but most will not at this age.

Many songs are covered in lessons, and the focus of each lesson differs according to each child's needs. For children with minimal speech or apraxia/speech disorder, we focus more on the execution of the lyrics, but not tediously so! Where children do not want to sing words, we can find alternative ways of using the voice. It's important that we start with favourite songs. We also include action songs, some movement and percussion, to mix things up a bit. Students also get the opportunity to explore the piano. Over time we learn musical elements (such as 'do re mi') and work on developing musical memory and a musical ear, and basic vocal techniques.

Sing-Swing-Play lessons fees are greatly reduced. However, there are only several places in this program. Please email to register your interest, and available times throughout the week.

PLEASE NOTE: Once students are attending primary school (mainstream or special), kids are no longer eligible to be part of the Sing-Swing-Play program, as it is specifically a non-profit preschool program. Lessons can continue, but at the full rate, and will be scheduled after school or Saturdays.
