Although laws vary from state to state, a EWPA Gold Card or similar documented training is required in Victoria to operate Telehandlers with a capacity of 3 tonnes or less. There is a lot of confusion in the industry relating to the licensing requirements of Telehandlers, on the Worksafe web site itself it is stated that an operator does not require a licence to operate a Telehandler with a capacity of 3 tonne or less. Although this statement is correct if a Worksafe Inspector attends the site or there is an accident on site the first thing they will ask for is documented evidence of the training on the Telehandler. This is where the EWPA Telehandler “Gold Card” can be used; don’t take the risk, huge fines and possible jail terms for Directors of company’s and the operators of the equipment could be issued if training on the equipment cannot be proven.
