TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a safe way to help you cope with labour. There are no side effects for you or your baby. It is a small, hand held machine you can control yourself which has attachments that you place on your back. You can use TENS throughout your labour and birth, at home and in hospital. You feel a tingling sensation on your back which you can increase as your labour progresses. You can help manage contractions with the press of a button. You can stay mobile and use it in conjunction with other strategies.

TENS works by helping your body to produce & release natural pain killing hormones, distracting the brain from labour sensations, blocking pain messages and empowering you to cope with labour more effectively. And most importantly, it’s easy to use

Our consultation with a qualified Women’s Health Physiotherapist occurs when you are 38 weeks pregnant, and you receive the TENS machine for 4 weeks. We will show you how to use the TENS machine safely. We will also provide you with everything you will need to use it effectively. The cost of the consultation & hire of the TENS machine attracts a rebate on private insurance. Use of the TENS machine is very popular, so book in early!

“It gave me something to focus on in labour, helping me feel in control.”
