Acupuncture is the insertion of sterile needles (on average 0.18mm thick) into defined acupoints on the body. This promotes the movement of qi (your body’s energy), strengthens weakness and reduces excesses bringing the body back into balance and promoting the natural healing response. It is a safe, effective, drug free treatment that has gain wide spread acceptance in the medical field, including formal recognition by the World Health Organization. Acupuncture treatments are generally painless. The sensation associated with needle insertion is a dull ache signalling “de qi” (i.e. the arrival of your bodies energy at the acupoint). This last for a millisecond, after which you will not feel any needle sensation. Needles are retained for 20mins, during which time you will be allowed to relax and unwind.
