Many women experience hot flushes and night sweats during menopause and for some years after. this is due to the normal fluctuations in hormones that occur at this time. Many women are offered drug treatments or creams to help control these symptoms of menopause. Possible risks and side effects of treatment concern many women, leading them to explore alternative therapies like hypnotherapy. In a recent study cited on Medscape, clinical hypnotherapy was used involving 187 postmenopausal women who had been experiencing a minimum of seven hot flashes per day. These women received then received five weekly sessions of clinical hypnotherapy or structured-attention control (control group). The frequency of their hot flashes were recorded for over a period of 12 weeks. The results showed that women receiving clinical hypnotherapy showed a reduction in hot flashes averaging 74% compared with the control group showing a reduction of 17%. Women also reported higher treatment satisfaction following hypnotherapy - 95% compared with 8.6% in the control group. "Conclusions. Compared with structured-attention control, clinical hypnosis results in significant reductions in self-reported and phsyiologically measured hot flashes and hot flash scores in postmenopausal women."
