Autism spectrum disorders are usually related to intellectual problems, disorders in motor coordination and attention along with other physical health related issues including sleep and gastrointestinal disorders. Some patients with autism spectrum disorder can have over-developed qualities although this tends to be rare. Autism may manifest during early phases of brain development, and significant signs appear during the initial 2-3 years of life and many of the signs remain undiagnosed by parents as they may think that these are just developmental stages. Asperger’s syndrome is placed at the “high functioning” end of the spectrum. Aspergers symptoms and signs may include restricted or improper social behaviors. Patients may exhibit pedantic an overly accurate language with the use of “big” words. They are also unable to understand many of the non-verbal and verbal communications, and social and emotional cuees. They may lack eye contact and usually like to talk about themselves and their interests, having one-sided conversations. However, it has to be considered that not all individuals show all these symptoms in Asperger’s syndrome. One problem with Asperger’s syndrome is that parents or other care takers are unwilling to acknowledge the problem until the child or adult starts to show serious problems or difficulties in their social lives at school and in their personal lives.
