Desktop computers and laptops (both PC and Mac) can be "pimped out" to reach their given limitations. Very rarely will you find that a computer/laptop that has been shipped or built with their maximum capabilities (unless it was custom built). All desktops/laptops are unique in their hardware unless you have a generic brand like DELL, COMPAQ, HP, etc. These desktops/laptops generally have the same hardware and specifications, but still can be upgraded. Generally speaking, the following can be upgraded on a computer/laptop to make it almost up to 5x faster than it currently is: Memory (ram) - This is how quickly the computer "thinks" about things - laptops are generally shipped with either half or below half their maximum limit. Desktop computers can also be maximized to their full RAM capabilities. Hard Disk Drive (HDD - storage) - This is how much data the computer can store - older laptops have very limited storage capabilities given today's music, photo and movie sizes. A different type of HDD (newer technology) can also make the laptop feel like a complete new one straight out of the box. It can also make the laptop load as fast as lightning! Operating System (OS - Windows, OSX, etc) - Suprisingly updating the computer/laptops operating system can make quite the difference. People believe that their computer is "too old" or "wont be able to handle it" - this is not always the case. Some newer operating systems know how to use/speak to your hardware better than previous versions. Driver Software and System BIOS (software that makes your OS talk to your hardware and BIOS is the system that runs your computer (black/blue screen when your computer starts up)) - Updating the drivers for certain components in your computer can be quite the benefit - different technologies have been founded, devices have been tweaked, graphics can run and look so much better - the options could shock to you. Updating the system BIOS can also bring benefits/options to the computer that it previously did not have but is very dangerous for the normal computer user to apply.
