Automatic transmissions range greatly in gear ratios and complexity. Some early units only had two gear ratios, while some newer transmissions have up to eight. Each of these transmissions have their own peculiarities that require specialised procedures and tooling for repair. Modern transmissions rely on computerised transmission control units (TCU) to control gear selection. The TCU calculates how and when to change gears for optimum performance, fuel economy and shift quality. It does this using sensors from the vehicle, as well as data provided by the engine control computer.
