Speech Pathology, Speech Therapy
Paediatric Speech Pathologist at Bentleigh Bayside Community Health work with children from 0 to school entry who have difficulty with the following communication and/or feeding difficulties, as well as Adults (see below)
Speech - the pronounciation of sounds
Language - understanding what words mean, putting sentences together, writing clearly, understanding written language
Pragmatics - the social conventions for how we interact with each other
Stuttering - the smooth rhythmand pattern of talking
Voice - the production of sounds by vibrating the vocal chords. Articulation or difficulty of pronouncing words
Feeding - swallowing/chewing
The service provided will vary according to the needs of the child and their family and may include:
Consultation to home, kinder or child care programs
Provision of home, kinder or child care programs
Therapy groups and/or short term individual therapy programs
The Adult Speech Pathology Service provides assessment and management of clients with swallowing and/or communication difficulties. It is largely a consultative and monitoring service, and provides education and support of individual clients and their carers to facilitate self-management in the home environment.
Client population includes: Neurological Disorders (e.g. Stroke, Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Muscular Dystrophy); Oral/ Head & Neck Cancer; and COPD.
