The Sino Iron project is being developed at Cape Preston, 100 kilometres south west of Karratha in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It is the largest magnetite mining and processing operation under construction in Australia. The Sino Iron project is focused on delivering a world class magnetite iron ore development which will add value to the Western Australian economy through significant downstream processing, employment, community benefits and international technology transfer while balancing social and environmental considerations.
CPM required a robust and effective solution to manage security issues and the health and safety of the site's employees and visitors, totalling 5000 employees and contractors in the construction phase alone. With this in mind, CPM were looking for a security solution that could overcome the exhaustive costs associated with developing additional infrastructure and extensive cabling requirements.
The STENTOFON system was chosen for its high audio quality and background noise cancelation abilities as noise is inherent with mine sites and other heavy industry situations. The IP and PoE functionality of the system allows the long distances to be covered without extensive cabling. Safety messages and other communication needs can be announced to all internal and external work areas via the IP horn speakers and calls made and received by the IP Vandal and Weather Resistant Substations which are located throughout the mine site. The whole system is controlled by a redundant AlphaCom XE 1 system providing 99.999% availability. The system is very accessible and easy to update using either the dual display or desktop master stations as well as the PC based soft client. The IP system is suitable for outdoor use and is able to withstand weather conditions equivalent to IP-65.
This fully comprehensive IP security and public address system interfaces seamlessly with the Siemens SiPass access control system to allow the workers to carry out their daily tasks with ease and to communicate with upmost safety in mind. The versatile IP system cuts down on installation time and expense by utilising existing network cabling and eliminating the need for an additional power supply.
