The Site OneSteel is Australia’s largest manufacturer of steel long products and a leading metals distribution company, with revenues of $7 billion. Through its merger with major Australian steelmaker, Smorgon Steel, the company markets more than 30,000 products to over 30,000 customers and has more than 11,000 employees in over 200 locations across Australia and offshore. From minerals extraction through to metal recycling, the totally integrated OneSteel will deliver cost and performance benefits to their customers and stakeholders in the construction, manufacturing, housing, mining and agricultural industries. The Challenge As a 24 hour manufacturing plant One Steel Laverton needed a robust and reliable system that could stand up to the heat of the steel production site. Each console along the production line needed to be able to communicate with each other and the office as well as send out alerts when a malfunction occurred. An obsolete Ring-Master CB-910 system had failed, and required to be replaced. The Solution STENTOFON were able to provide OneSteel with a new AlphaCom E7 Intercom Exchange, equipped to replace all existing Ring-Master handsets. The equipment cupboard was tidied, catalogued and documented for ease of fault diagnosis. All Ring-Master handsets were replaced with STENTOFON Desk/Wall Master Stations with handsets, and the noisiest locations now benefit from Noise Cancelling Industrial Master Stations with the special membrane microphone, which allows the control room operators to hear over the extreme background noise. All stations communicate over the existing wiring, with only the short patch lead from wall to station to be renewed to cope with the altered pinouts. The Outcome The Onesteel plant now benefits from the higher audio quality of the STENTOFON system, with a product that is up to date that allows the plant operators to communicate quickly and effectively to ensure the highest level of safety in the workplace.
