Trigger points, also known as trigger sites or muscle knots, are described as very irritable spots within muscles that are defined by palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. By applying pressure to these points, a release of entire complexes of tense or tight muscles is possible. Trigger points are often associated with what is called "referred pain". Referred pain happens when a trigger point in one muscle produces pain, discomfort or tingling sensations in another part of the body. This referred pain often appears in identified patterns, meaning that treatment can follow a sequential plan. Other times trigger points are "local". This means that only the muscle where the trigger point is located is affected. Trigger point therapy is always begun with thorough warming of the muscles to be treated, and followed by integrated deep massage aimed at allowing the muscles to adjust to their normal, relaxed configuration.
