Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique which assists in the treatment of lymphoedema, a swelling of body tissues caused by damage to vessels which remove fluids from the spaces between cells.
MLD helps to move lymph through the lymphatic system manually. Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy to direct lymph away from swollen limbs and tissues back into the blood system, which the fluid can be recycled and further processed.
Some people who have had, for example, cancer surgery or physical injuries, or infections of lymph nodes, can benefit from this style of massage. The technique also calls upon specific breathing techniques for the person receiving the treatment.
