Puppy Preschool at Tasmanian Animal Hospitals Are you lucky enough to have acquired a new canine family member? Has your puppy had his first vaccination? Is your puppy under 16 weeks of age? Would you like to guide your puppy to be a safe, sociable and manageable member of your family and the wider community? Would you like to continue with training after puppy classes have finished? Well then we are here for you!! At Tasmanian Animal Hospitals our Puppy Classes are held in a secure, safe environment and take into account your puppy’s temperament and confidence level. Our qualified instructor (Cert IV Canine behavioral Training) and nurse, Sam, invites you to contact us as soon as your puppy arrives in her new home, to book into a class. Classes are held one night per week (usually Tuesday) from 6.30-7.30pm for four weeks. Puppies over 8 weeks of age are invited to attend and participate numbers range from 4-8 puppies per class.* Comprehensive notes are provided each week. Classes run on a work (train), play, settle routine and owners are encouraged to use a NILIF (Nothing in Life is Free) program at home to avoid getting into conflict with their puppy. Operant and classical conditioning are discussed and utilized, training is based on proven scientific laws rather than human assumption and anecdotes. What affects learning, how do dogs (and us!) learn, what are useful behaviors for pet dogs to have, how can you help your puppy to enjoy having his nails trimmed, how can handling help prevent mouthing and biting? All these questions and much more will be answered (and practiced) during your course. Our focus is on helping you train your puppy proactively (rather than reactively) so that problem behaviors do not begin. Positive reinforcement increases the likelihood of desirable behaviors (such as your puppy sitting in front of you rather than jumping up), re-occurring, and thus is the chosen Law of Effect utilisized in our classes.
