Tandem skydiving has been around since the early 80′s. It is the easiest way to experience the thrill of skydiving. In fact, our very own Chief Instructor introduced tandem skydiving to South Australia. Tandem skydiving or tandem parachuting refers to a type of skydiving where a student skydiver is connected via a harness to a tandem instructor. The instructor guides the student through the whole jump from exit through freefall, piloting the canopy, and landing. The student needs only minimal instruction before making a tandem jump. This is one of three commonly used training methods for beginning skydivers. After about 10 minutes of training, you will be geared up in your own harness and head out to the plane. The flight to exit height takes from 15-25 minutes and offers spectacular views. Prior to the door opening you will be connected to your Tandem Master and put your goggles on. We recommend to go as high as possible, freefall is exhilarating and you will be falling at over 200km/hr. Most people find it is over way to soon, the extra height makes a big difference. Once the parachute opens you will be able to talk with your Tandem Master again and you will practice the landing as well as steer the parachute if you like. The parachute ride can be as mild or wild as you like! All of our modern tandem skydiving systems use a drogue parachute, which is deployed shortly after leaving the plane in order to decrease the skydivers’ terminal velocity. This is necessary for proper parachute deployment, lengthening the duration of the skydive, and allowing the skydivers to fall at the same speed as videographers. Tandem skydiving systems also use larger main parachutes (360 square feet and larger) to support the additional weight of two passengers. The APF requires tandem parachute rigs to be equipped with a main and reserve parachute, as well as an automatic activation device (AAD), a safety device that automatically deploys the reserve parachute if it detects that the skydivers are still at freefall speed below a certain altitude. We generally land in front of the spectator area only metres from your friends and family.
