HOW WILL I BENEFIT FROM A MASSAGE
Massage is well known to have a wealth of health benefits such as aiding with relaxation, improving blood pressure, pain relief, assisting in mood improvement, stress and depression reduction and increasing the feeling of good health and general wellbeing.
Below are findings from research into the benefits of massage:
CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME
Immediately following massage therapy, depressed mood, anxiety and stress hormone (cortisol) levels were reduced. Following 10 days of massage therapy, fatigue related symptoms, particularly anxiety and somatic symptoms, were reduced, as were depression, difficulty sleeping and pain. Stress hormone (cortisol) also decreased and dopamine increased. BY Field, T et al. 1997. Chronic fatigue syndrome: Massage therapy effects on depression and somatic symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome. Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 3, 43-51.
LOWER BACK PAIN
A comprehensive massage therapy method including 30-35 minutes of soft tissue manipulation with techniques such as friction, trigger points, and neuromuscular therapy, remedial exercises and education on posture for 6 treatments in one month reported improvement in function, decrease in pain intensity, quality of the pain and in level of anxiety At 1 month follow-up 63% of subjects reported no pain. Massage therapy (as compared to transcutaneous electrical stimulation) improved sleep patterns and decreased pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression and cortisol levels in adults with fibromyalgia..
