What is spray foam?
Spray foam is made from specially blended polyurethane
components called ‘systems’. It can be sprayed into walls, ceilings, and other
areas that need to be insulated including encasing pools and spas.
As the foam cures it expands to fill any gaps and will create
an airtight and water-resistant seal while also improving the structural
integrity of the home from within the wall cavity.
While loose packed fibreglass blankets or batts can settle
over time and create an invisible void or gap in your environmental barrier the
rigid nature of spray foam ensures that it remains in place for the life of the
Properly installed foam insulation is intended to prevent the
home from becoming too hot in summer and too cold in winter, helping to reduce
the amount of air-conditioning needed to regulate the interior.
The most obvious benefit to the homeowner is the reduction
of their energy bill and ultimately their carbon footprint.
The ease of application and ability to penetrate into
cavities enables spray foam to create a more efficient seal against drafts, insects
and vermin that will try to enter the home.
What to look for when
selecting a spray foam for your home
Properly specified foam insulation should have a
higher ‘’ than
traditional fibreglass insulation and panels or cladding made from polystyrene
products - compare the R-Value against the product thickness, spray foam can be
applied at almost any thickness to provide an R-Value that meets your
Spray foam insulation is generally fire retarded
- remember to always check the manufacturer’s data before approving any
Not all spray foams are equal - compare R-Value
and post cure shrinkage. You don’t want to pay for 50mm of insulation only to
find that you have 25mm behind your walls with gaps that let your
air-conditioning dollars flow out while allowing pests an easy way in.
Due to the need for specialised application
equipment and an understanding of correct foam specification any installation
should always be carried out by a professional spray foam applicator.
Don’t be afraid to contact the manufacturer - it
is their job to help you understand what their product can do for you.
