How Glass Oil Candles are Made
Glass oil candles are hand blown in
a traditional and highly skilful way.
tube of borosilicate glass, 2.4mm thick, is held in the jaws of a lathe. A bung
is placed each end of the tube. At one end, the bung is fitted with another,
flexible tube, through which the craftsman will blow.
tube is turned at high speed in the lathe, and held in a blowtorch-like flame. Each
section is heated, while the glassblower makes use of the tube to blow the glass
into the desired shape, with the help of carbon paddles.

form a stem, or base as desired.
the piece needs to be strengthened. It is heated slowly in an oven to 600
degrees centigrade, before being cooled just as gradually. This results in a
well crafted, practical piece of art.
