Yoga is a fun way for children to develop important skills in a supportive non-competitive environment.
At a young age kids learn from everything around. At these days they have so much going on. It is very hard for them to focus on anything. An ability to FOCUS and CONCENTRATE is one of the most important skills when you’re getting ready for school. And, as you know, FIRST 5 YEARS LAST FOR A LIFETIME.
Yoga is the best way to teach kids how to focus. It gives them these precious body awareness and self-confidence. Yoga is a great remedy for anything; there is no judgment in a yoga class about how a child does a pose or plays a game.
Doing a pose “perfectly” is not the aim of yoga, which nourishes a child’s inner strength and self- acceptance. The nurturing atmosphere encourages children to relax and have fun while they develop their strength, flexibility and balance, but also a body awareness, better focus and concentration, and self-confidence.
Yoga is a holistic practice, with an inner as well as an outer focus. But most importantly, it’s FUN!
How we do it:
- We do traveling poses to reach our destination
- We meet the people who live there and we do the things they do in yoga (singing, swimming, surfing, dancing…)
- We see nature and we imitate the trees, mountains, waves, rocks etc. with our bodies (same goes with animals!)
- We get hungry so we do a yoga picnic with food poses
- We decide to go to the beach, yoga sunbathe for a bit and meet sea creatures as we go on a yoga boat We do whatever our imagination can create
At the end we get tired, so we lie down and we use our imagination to journey back (maybe on a flying rug) to where the class is Kids this age easily get bored with repetition, so I keep the activities varied.
We don’t go on the same yoga journey twice.
I can use some of the same poses, but I wrap them in a different story every time.
