MT CLEAR College’s Earth Ed science centre has become a lot brighter after the installation of a wind and solar powered light at the entrance to the building. The first of its kind in Victoria, the innovative nine metre high contraption was this week lifted into position by crane and set to begin operating immediately. Earth Ed director Bob Hartmann said the light, powered by a wind turbine and solar panel, was another example of the innovative technology being installed at the science centre. “This will give students the opportunity to actually see renewable energy in action,” Mr Hartmann said. “Students often think of wind turbines as being big farms, but it can be as simple as something like this.” The French-designed system is widely used throughout Europe and is the first to be installed in Victoria. Mr Hartmann plans to integrate the new system into the centre’s renewable energy teaching program. Ballarat’s Earth Ed centre provided learning to more than 3,500 students from around Victoria in the past year. *Article: Patrick Byrne, thecourier.com.au, 16 March 2013
