Torqeedo Outboards, Torqeedo Motors
According to the Australian Department of the Environment, modern 4-stroke outboards pollute nature to the same extent as 50 cars (both traveling the same distance). An old 2-stroke outboard is even comparable to 500 cars. So, when considering your next tender or RIB, or an outboard for your yacht, perhaps you should look more closely at the Torqeedo range of outboard motors. Developments in electronics, material and battery technology have dramatically improved the potential of electric drives in recent years. Torqeedo, a German company, specialise in electric boat drives. With restrictions on the use of combustion engines on European lakes, Torqeedo saw a gap in the market for a range of state-of-the-art electric drives; a range that would be attractive economically as well as environmentally. The motors are brushless, electronically controlled, and offer 24 times the torque of conventional electric motors. Approximately 44% of the energy stored in the battery transforms into propulsive power – a figure that usually sits around 20% on conventional electric outboards. Depending on the application, the lithium-manganese batteries offer eight times the energy density of your average lead acid, lead gel or AGM battery. One of the most positive aspects though, apart from the obvious power outputs, has to be their ecological impact – or lack of it. They do not develop any emissions and there are no oil drips or spillage to contend with. The Travel series are ultra-lightweight (11.4 - 12.2kg), foldable, the battery is integrated, and they come with their own waterproof travel pack. They would be ideal for small boats, dinghies, tenders and daysailers up to 1.5 ton displacement. Motors in the Base Travel range have the same efficiency as the Travel series, but are connected just like conventional electric drives and have a fixed shaft. As no lithium batteries are integrated into the BaseTravel models, they are considerably less expensive than the Travel motors. With the thrust force of a 6 HP combustion engine, the Torqeedo Cruise is the emission-free alternative for sailing and motor boats with displacement of up to three tons. They are equipped with the latest torque technology, optimised drive train and propeller, making them extremely efficient. Davmar Marine & Leisure offers several Torqeedo outboard options from the Cruise, Travel and Base series. , Their office, showroom and workshop are situated in the heart of Australia’s Gold Coast Marine Precinct. .
