Pap Smear tests are a screening test for women involving an examination of the cervix (neck of the womb). Sample cells are removed from the cervix to check for changes which occur prior to cancer developing. These changes can be treated and cancer prevented. We recommend that all women up to the age of 70 years who are or have been sexually active should have regular smears unless otherwise advised by the Doctor. Breast examinations are a good idea for all women to examine their own breasts regularly for lumps. If you are not sure how to do this your doctor will be able to show you. We also suggest an annual breast examination by your doctor and in addition, if you are 40 years or older, you should also have a second yearly mammogram.
