Deter or Arrest?

The electronic security industry is enjoying a massive boom as new technology emerges and the price of electronics drops, but what exactly does it all mean for the average user. Does all of this new technology actually solve your security issues? To answer this question you first have to decide what it is that you are trying to achieve. Do you want to deter the offenders from vandalising and/or breaking in, or do you want to arrest the offenders?
The very first alarm systems were designed to help the police arrest offenders. Detection consisted of breaking a simple circuit, usually with a switch at a door or window as the offenders entered a premises...catching them in the act. These silent systems had no siren to scare off the intruders because the goal was a red-handed arrest. The systems were expensive and usually only installed in banks. Fast forward 160 years and alarm systems have changed from being an expensive luxury (that only the banks could afford), to being relatively cheap that most businesses and households can afford. Over time the function of an alarm system changed from being a device used to aid in the arrest of offenders to being a device used to deter offenders. External sirens, internal screamers and flashing strobe lights have been added to alarm systems to help deter offenders by scaring them off. Like a car alarm prevents offenders from taking your car in the first place. These alarm systems rely on the offender taking a risk assessment of your premises and determining that the risk of being caught is too high. In a residential area this would probably be likely, especially if your neighbours are close and are at home most of the time.
However for businesses or construction sites this is not usually the case. Most businesses and construction sites are surrounded by similar premises and aren’t usually located in residential areas. After closing time, the business owners and employees pack up and head home, leaving their site/s at risk. With no neighbours to investigate any noises or alarms, and a higher value of items to steal, offenders are more likely to accept the risk and break-in. This is why the traditional alarm system doesn’t really suit these sites. With an influx of cheap detectors on the market leading to more false alarms, the police just don’t have the resources to investigate unverified alarm systems. Video alarm systems such as Videofied have been proven to be a better solution as these systems allow operators to verify a crime-in-progress leading to quicker police responses and more arrests. Changing the objective from deterrence to apprehension.
So before you invest in the latest security alarm system on the market, consider your objective- deter or arrest.
