Diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues
Counselling, Mental Health, Mental Illness
Visiting a psychiatrist for the first time may seem quite daunting. Psychiatrists aren’t that different to other medical doctors, though you will probably find they tend to ask a lot more questions.
The first appointment will usually take around 50 minutes, and during this time your psychiatrist will ask about the problems identified in your referral letter, as well as other questions related to your past history. If you have relevant medical investigations or reports you should bring these along.
Remember, it is not always possible to provide a diagnosis or management plan after just one session. A full assessment usually takes two to three sessions, following which a summary letter will be written to the referring doctor.
A management plan may include prescribed medication as well as counselling or therapy.
