The safety of henna as it is used in herbal hair colours was a frequent topic of heated and controversial discussion in the past. For LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik AG, the global market leader for natural hair products, it was a matter of top priority in their customers’ interests to have the absolute safety of this raw material scientifically substantiated. Hence, extensive tests were performed on the materials and the combinations of raw materials used at the company, then on the products themselves, including their instructions for use. The former took place whilst working for many years in close cooperation with the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), within the framework of an EU-level project. The result: the Henna used by LOGOCOS was again classified as being totally safe. Since all the tests were performed exclusively with material used by LOGOCOS, the results cannot be generalised and transferred to products from other manufacturers of natural herbal hair colours; however, LOGONA customers can continue using their hair colours, knowing that they can feel completely safe in future, too. Henna is safe to use as a hair dye when the content of Lawsone, the main colouring ingredient of the henna plant, is below 1.4%. (Conditions of application: 100g Henna powder, 300 ml of boiling water – as recommended for the LOGONA hair colours).
